Set the first piece equal to zero and solve for x
x^2 - 4 = 0
x^2 = 4
x = sqrt(4) or x = -sqrt(4)
x = 2 or x = -2
Keep in mind that the first piece y = x^2-4 is only graphed when x = 2 or larger, so we ignore x = -2. This is one x intercept, but there may be more. Let's check the other graph to see what we get.

x-2+2 = 0+2
x = 2
