Instead of simply departed, Tennyson used "quickly rose". Instead of "went to the sword and took it up", Tennyson uses "LEAPING down the ridges ... lightly PLUNGED among the bulrush-beds". And it continues. There is more action because of the increased used of adjectives to describe the movements of the character.
