Dee most likely refers to Dee from "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker. In this story, Dee is one of the two daughters of Mama, the other one being Maggie. Maggie and Dee, however, are extremely different people. Maggie enjoys a domestic life, and she does not have great ambitions in life. However, Dee is educated and she wants to be a modern woman.
<u>What Dee wants from her mother is to be able to keep the quilts her grandmother made. </u>She believes that they are part of their heritage and they deserve to be preserved. On the other hand, Maggie wants the quilts for everyday use, and she believes this is simply a different way of honouring her heritage.
