In The Call of the Wild, we meet a dog named Buck who is owned by Judge Miller. He is a large dog that lives in Santa Clara Valley. However, there is a man who works in the state as a gardener called Manuel. Manuel is a gambler, and he owes money due to his gambling in the Chinese lottery. He uses Buck to pay for his gambling debt, and Buck is taken North in order to be used as a sled dog.
