They are usually formed by plate tectonics with a depth of about 2,600 meters (8,500 ft) and rises about two kilometers above the deepest portion of an ocean basin.
A rift represents a lowland region that forms where Earth's tectonic plates move apart, or rift. An example is the Rhine rift valley in Germany.
