This refers to Steinbeck's short story called The Chrysanthemums. Elisa is a lonely women who doesn't really feel the thrill living her routine life with her husband anymore. So when this stranger appears, initially she is wary of him and wants him to go away, but the moment he shows appreciation for her flowers, she starts to warm up to him.
