In this, all slaves in the southern states that formed the Confederation were declared free from January 1, 1863. However, states that voluntarily rejoined the Union before the end of 1863 were promised to retain slavery.

In 1865, the Thirteenth Amendment was added to the United States Constitution, which prohibits slavery and involuntary servitude except as punishment for the commission of a crime.
