The details add to the story because in the beginning of the story, things seemed calm and relaxed. But as the night drew closer, the calm, relaxing feeling drifted away and was replaced with a dark, mysterious feeling of suspense. Gatsby first becomes interested in Nick after finding out that Nick is Daisy's cousin. In the beginning, his effort to become Nick's friend seems to be based on his hope that Nick will re-introduce him to Daisy.
Later, as Gatsby and Daisy become close again, Nick helps arrange the meetings between them. However, Gatsby doesn't seem to expect much more than that from Nick.
