In the story, John, the son of a priest, heads towards the Place of the Gods, an area he is not allowed to visit. His father supports his spiritual journey, unaware of the actual location John is going to. John longs to visit the 'dead places' forbidden by the laws of people. In this way, he breaks the rules established in his society.

<em>Conflict</em> is a struggle between opposite forces, often between a character and society. John's hunger to learn motivates him to take risks, and is in direct conflict with the laws of the priesthood.
