The Democratic Party was the party of southerners and supported slavery, the Democratic party was split into the northern and southern Democratic parties the northern party was more willing to compromise were as the southerners supported slavery without compromise. The republican party was anti slavery and nominated abarham Lincoln the southern democrats nominated John C Breaknridge the incumbent vice president, the northern democrats nominated Steven Douglas a senator from illinois.
