S^2=\frac{(33-31)^2}{4-1}+\frac{(31-31)^2}{4-1}+\frac{(24-31)^2}{4-1}+\frac{(36-31)^2}{4-1}\\\\ S^2=\frac{4}{3}  + \frac{0}{3} + \frac{49}{3} + \frac{25}{3} \\\\S^2= \frac{4+49+25}{3}\\\\S^2=\frac{78}{3}  \\\\S^2=26

Therefore, for given sample of salaries of four employees, the variance of their salaries is: 26 thousands of dollars
