As a result of our mistakes in Vietnam, the US's foreign policy has shifted toward one containment policy.

What is a containment strategy?

The Cold War saw the United States pursuing a containment-based foreign policy. The doctrine, which was first outlined by George F. Kennan in 1947, claimed that communism needed to be confined and isolated in order to prevent it from spreading to other nations. Foreign policy advisers in the United States held the view that, like a line of dominoes, as soon as one nation adopted communism, the entire region would follow suit. The domino theory was the name for this viewpoint. Following the containment strategy and domino theory ultimately resulted in American action in Grenada, Central America, and Vietnam. After World War Two, when countries formerly under Nazi domination were divided between the U.S.S.R.'s conquests and the newly liberated states of France, Poland, and the remainder of Nazi-occupied Europe, the Cold War was born.
