Agriculture is an important part of the economies of many high island nations, and commercial agriculture is practiced on many of the high islands. These islands have fertile soils that support a wide variety of crop growth, including mangoes, pineapples, sugar cane, and yams. By contrast, the low islands lack fertile soils and adequate rainfall for widespread farming. Instead, most of the islanders living on low islands practice subsistence agriculture. Coconuts, taro, and breadfruit are important resources that grow naturally on these islands.
