The North won the Civil War. After four years of conflict, the major Confederate armies surrendered to the United States in April of 1865 at Appomattox Court House and Bennett Place. The Union won the most battles in the Civil War, though the Confederacy enjoyed many significant successes which prolonged the conflict for years. It had many important repercussions which went on to have a deep and long lasting impact on the nation. Among these were the Emancipation Proclamation; the Assassination of President Lincoln; the Reconstruction of Southern America; and the Jim Crow Laws.
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand lead to a direct conflict between the two powers (Austria and Russia) and further lead to the war. Hope that helps.
