The newspaper, written between 1660 and 1669, recounts his social ascent within his position in the admiralty. Thanks to his talent in administration and his hard work, he progressively achieved various positions added to the controller, and won the favor of the Lord of Admiralty, the future James II of England. When he concludes his diary, in 1669, Pepys recalls his poverty at the beginning until his present situation, which allowed him to enjoy luxuries such as his own carriage. On the death of Carlos II, Jacobo II appointed Pepys Admiralty, the highest administrative position in that branch of government. As Chief Secretary, he introduced a series of measures that would lead to the modernization of the naval administration, through cost reduction and increased efficiency; such measures would then extend to the rest of the British government, and lay the foundations of the modern British Civil Service.
