The end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century was characterized by the mass awakening of national consciousness globally. The countries of Latin America were under the occupation of the Spanish colonial powers. South American nationalists, modeled on the French Revolution and the American War of Independence, begin their struggle against the Spanish occupiers. The people realized that it was possible to settle accounts with the rulers and move towards the path of their freedom. Belonging to the national identity of South America's people has existed before, but a certain "trigger" was needed to awaken that consciousness.
