The formula for Pythagorean Theorem is "a^2 + b^2 = c^2". Then we follow these steps.

  1. Fill in the known values. 3^2 + 7^2 = c^2
  2. Simplify the squared numbers. 9 + 49 = c^2
  3. Add the numbers together. 58 = c^2
  4. Square root both sides. √58 = c.
  5. Round up to the nearest whole mile. 7.615 = c; c = 8.
