The people will become aware of not only what is going on around them, but they will be aware of the history of the world. They will finally realize their own reality and their own destiny. Jonas does not agree with the idea of Sameness. He does not regret leaving the community, but he will miss The Giver. You could assume that Jonas and Gabriel do die, since the book does infer that they are freezing to death.
