The Palais Garnier, known to many to this day as the "Paris Opera," was the largest opera house and theatre when it opened in 1874, on January 5th. The large building was designed by Charles Garnier and was one of 171 proposals submitted in an architectural competition in 1861. The Palais Garnier took over 14 years to build due to its completion being delayed by debt and the Franco-Prussian War, when the building was used as a warehouse, and an unfortunate fire that burned and gutted the interior and killed a fireman in 1873.
Answer: It was the primary theatre of the Paris Opera and its associated Paris Opera Ballet until 1989, when a new opera house, the Opéra Bastille, opened at the Place de la Bastille. The company now uses the Palais Garnier mainly for ballet. The theatre has been a monument historique of France since 1923.
