This line is taken from the book "The Mark" by Edith Bülbring.

The book "The Mark" is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the struggle for survival is more desperate than ever where in an environment even the children had to face with insurmountable odds and had tragic struggles of survival. The major themes of the novel starts to take shape as most of the appearances and characters are generally deceptive and no character can be sure of anyone else.

The author, Edith Bülbring is disheartened by the chaos, the brutal, oppressive systems around her and so she condemns hose who control the affair of the state and oppress others​. In the book she states that she had to hide her true feelings all the time so that people don't use them against her.
