Read the excerpt from the introduction to Wheels of Change . When I was a kid, I took great pleasure in jumping on my bike and r

iding to the corner candy store about half a mile away. Although I had no knowledge of the part the bicycle had played as a vehicle of change for turn-of-the-20th-century women, I was acutely aware that it allowed this 1960s girl a unique measure of independence. On my bike, I could break free of the bonds that held me in my neighborhood to go buy Necco Wafers and candy necklaces and Atomic FireBalls. If I felt particularly adventurous, I could even ride a bit farther for a fresh ice-cream cone at Applegate Farm. Which statement best characterizes this excerpt?

This question is missing the options. I've found the complete question online. Since the excerpt is the same, I will omit it.

Which statement best characterizes this excerpt?

A. The author describes the long-term effects of having a bicycle as a child.

B. The author describes the long-term effects of women riding bicycles at the turn of the twentieth century.

C. The author describes the short-term effects of having a bicycle as a child.

D. The author describes the short-term effects of women riding bicycles at the turn of the twentieth century.

Answer:

The statement which best characterizes this excerpt is:

C. The author describes the short-term effects of having a bicycle as a child.

Explanation:

Sue Macy, the author of "Wheels of Change", focuses on her own experience riding a bike as a child in this passage. She will progress to the history concerning the freedom bicycles brought to women, and how women had to fight to have the right to that freedom. But, as she explains in the excerpt, when she was just a kid, she knew nothing of that. She did know her bike allowed her to go places - to buy candy or ice cream. These are short-term effects of her owning a bike as a child. The long-term effects of women riding bikes, however, are not the point - at least at this moment in the book.

Write a story which begins with two people waiting for someone.

Answer:

It was already 4 pm and Hendricks wasn't back yet. I and Zola had been at the diner now for over 12 hours. Definitely, something didn't smell right.

Had he been caught?

Did the car break down?

Did he develop cold feet?

Did his father come back suddenly?

A million and one scenarios flipped through our minds and we wiled away time sipping away at our cups speaking in hushed tones as we did the analysis.

We had ordered about 7 rounds of coffee now and pretended like we were working on something very serious. But for that, Mr. Lesley would have grown suspicious. He was always suspicious anyways, but we had not counted on staying that long.

We had to order for something else, otherwise, we'd overdose on caffeine and pay for it. We thankfully, Koffee Hut didn't only sell coffee, they had fruit smoothies.

By the time we ordered the second smoothie, it was clear that Hendricks was not going to show up. His lines were now dead, we couldn't call his cop dad. His mum and siblings were out of town and we were out of cash.

Thankfully, there was enough gas in the tank. Or so we thought. Then we decided it was time to call it a day.

As we drove off into the night, still oblivious of the fact that we only had enough fuel to take us halfway, our minds raced to solve the Hendricks puzzle.

Cheers!

Answer:

The speaker in Derek Walcott's Midsummer describes in his perspective the allusions in the Brixton riots. By analyzing the two allusions in his poem, the sonnets, "I was there to add some color to the British theater." that black people are generally viewed and treated as outsiders, and his feelings and emotions about racial tension in England among other race. The speaker uses another type of allusion in literature, "But the blacks can't do Shakespeare, they have no experience." Derek Walcott's had a deep knowledge of Shakespeare. In other words, the speaker's allusion and perspective were critical of the attitude that the British towards the race in England, where he also feel distant from other black people.
