This right is very important for the citizenry because of what the colonists just finished fighting: a tyrranical monarch. The people yearned for a way to defend themselves if the government ever overstepped its bounds again. This goes hand in hand with the 1st Amendment, the right to free speech, protest, religion, and press. You could say that the 1st Amendment protects a person's rights socially, while the 2nd Amendment protects a person's rights physically.
