In Paragraph 1 Of The Section“Doc-Lap at Last,” the author says, “The Americans cringed at the thought of a Communist Vietnam.”

The word cringe literally means “to bend your head in fear.” In this context, what does cringe mean? What feeling does the word “cringe” give you, and how does that help you understand the main idea of this paragraph?

Answer:

I think that cringe means that a response to embarrasement. But right now in this text I think this word means that they didn't want that to happen. Or they thought that was not good. Hopefully it's right. I mean that's just my opinion. :D
