The effects were complete colonization. Whoever went to those lands would take land for themselves and colonize the region in the name of the European countries from which they came. The Atlantic slave trade was important for this because they could get slaves for the Americas from African colonies. It was different insofar that they didn't really develop Africa much or invest in it. Slaves were used to make the colonies in the Americas great, while African colonies were stripped of resources and people were taken as slaves.
