<em>racine/radical du verbe (comme pour le futur) + terminaisons de l'imparfait</em>

ais - ais - ait-  ions - iez - aient

unfortunately,  "pouvoir" is irregular ..!!

so you use the roots of the future -->

préférer -> nous préférer- ons (futur) ==> -ions ->conditionnel

pouvoir   ---> tu pou-rras (futur)===> -ais --> conditionnel
