With social darwinism and laissez faire these business owners could prevent the government from trying to regulate them and they could take out rival companies and potentially monopolize whichever market they operated in.</span>

The Muckrakers were a group of journalists and writers that provided an important spark and ignited the Progressive movement. They were interested in exposing the problems in American society and urged the public to identify solutions.
They helped initiate the Progressive Era by analyzing if those bad conditions were linked to corrupt politics, poor working conditions in factories, bad living conditions of the working class and others.
They sparkled this analysis into people who read the newspapers and that wanted to change for their lives and because of that, an agenda was created.
Democrats had been losing elections in what had long been considered solid Democratic territory in the South. Lyndon B. Johnson, a Democrat who took up the presidency after John F. Kennedy was assassinated, had become associated in the minds of voters with the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement aimed to give black Americans equality. This did not sit well with white voters in the South. In the 1964 presidential election, the Republican candidate, Barry Goldwater, won the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. Nevertheless, Johnson prevailed and won the election. But it showed conservative Democrats were willing to shift to the Republican party if they felt it more closely aligned with their views.
