If you’re talking about the book Hatchet, then I believe it is because Brian is alone, it will be cold, harder to keep warm, harder to find food because not as many animals put, harder to keep fire going.
Not following the Jim Crow laws would be a huge problem for African-American people depending on what they did. They could be incarcerated, fined, beaten, or even worse, lynched and killed. A famous African-American child was killed by an angry mob after a white woman claimed that his behavior was inappropriate and what's even worse is that the people who killed him were acquitted.
