The main cause for the debates was the issue of slavery into the territories, that gained major importance with the addition of new territories with the Mexican American War.
On the first debate, Douglas claimed that by advocating for slavery prohibition in the US the Republican Party aimed to miscegenate the nation, by mix-racing through sexual relations or marriage.
