The city of Pompeii is left almost intact under all the debris, and the objects (skeletons/bodies, artifacts, etc) that remain are unchanged because of the calcified layers of ash that covered them, following the pyroclastic flow that struck the city. Everything is well-preserved; it is like a glimpse into the past.

The city is considered to be "frozen in time".

Thus, historians can observe the artifacts and see the city as it was. This accuracy can help them gain much insight about Ancient Rome, as they don't have to make as many conjectures.
