I actually just did this as a project for my English class. Basically, they both create meaning by telling you of the struggles they went through. In "gumption" Oyster and his boy are dealing with racial injustice. In "to build a fire" he is challenged with surviving in the wilderness in the middle of winter. (hope I helped)

Answer: B. God Hermes (in Roman mythology-god Mercury), is the embodiment of the exchange, transfer and transition from one State or position to another.
Hermes gives to gods prayers of people, and to people-blessings of gods. As a conductor of souls, God Hermes embodies the transition from life to death. God of eloquence and treaties, Hermes (Mercury) conveys to others the thoughts of a speaker or messenger. Hermes accompanies the souls of deceased people and is the messenger and the expression of God's will on Earth.

Question 1. The answer is perfection. This is made clear by the narrators obsession with the beauty and perfection of the white umbrella.
Question 2. The answer is because she had to work late. The story clearly states that their mother wasn't going to be on time because she had to work.
Question 3. The best answer I can come up with is that she knows her feelings of shame are inappropriate.
I gave the answers to questions 4 and 5 in the comments.
Hope this helps!
