As water freezes its volume will expand and break a sealed copper pipe full of water. Because water is undergoing a phase change into ice/crystalline molecular state.

Experiment with a cylinder of equal percentages water and cooking oil. Lighter/less dense oil will float on top of the water. Put colored ice cubes in and they float but as the ice melts, water droplets form and sink down to join the higher density water already on the bottom.

Density of ice or 0 deg C is approximately .99989 grams/cubic centimeter.
Water at 4 deg C is .99995 gm/cm cubed
