Let us now calculate the slope;

m =  \frac{y2 - y1}{x2 - x1}

We shall take the first two points

m =  \frac{4 - 2}{2 - 1}  \\ m =  \frac{2}{1} \\ m = 2

Next we shall take the 2nd and 3rd points

m =  \frac{8 - 4}{3 - 2}  \\ m =  \frac{4}{1}  \\ m = 4

The slope is not the same for these two different point, hence this table does not represent a linear function.
