One important difference between the economic systems of the north and the south in the period 1790-1840 was Industrialization and Immigration. I would say that immigration has drastically changed, the form of immigration has now changed more to immigrating by airplane, instead of crossing the border by foot or by car. As well as the increased laws and protection on immigration has made it more difficult for immigrates to come to the U.S.
That would be a suburb. Outside of most cities are smaller residences or suburbs. It's not as hectic as the big city, and most will have access to public transportation and apartments(suburbs closer to rural areas will most likely have neighborhoods), but a more relaxed atmosphere, similar to a rural area.
