Answer:

In A Good Place for Maggie, the author uses a flashback to create a sense of tension. For example, in one flashback, Maggie describes writing her mother a letter because “her mom and stepfather were away on business.” In her letter, she describes why she chose to leave and asks her mother to “please don’t be mad” at her. This flashback creates a sense of tension between Maggie and her mother. The reader can infer that Maggie did not ask permission to drive to Twisted Creek and that her mother will most likely be upset when she discovers that Maggie is gone. The flashback also builds tension by revealing that Maggie is upset with her mother for being away a lot.

Since we learn that the aunt has a soft heart, I will say that 'this is an example of indirect characterization', because we learn of her characteristics in an indirect way, that is, we are not directly told that she has a soft heart, we can infer that information from this passage.
