Kids have a different view of Compton than their parents do...

This sentence means that although the parents felt fine about moving to Compton in the 1950's, things have changed since then. Normally children are supposed to have pride in their hometown. But in the lives of these children, they can only hang their heads when their hometown is mentioned. This shows that the town has changed, though not for the better.
