Both of these samples be pure phosphorus if the atoms and other impurities are removed from chemical as well as physical means. Pure phosphorus means that there is only atoms of phosphorus present but pure phosphorus is not available because of its reactivity so for that reason it reacted with the oxygen present in the air and formed phosphate molecules and stabilize itself.

Once they understood the structure of DNA a lot of things became more clear including how DNA was replicated. 

So I think your answer is copies? meaning how it is copied (replicated).

The structure also led later on to how it was transcribed into mRNA (and eventually into proteins by ribosomes).
