Explanation:

In this poem the poet has talked about world war -I.In the first world war the warfare technique used was that of the Trench warfare.

In trench warfare long Trenches , narrow ditches are created by digging the ground and it was the place where the  soldiers lived. These trenches where very  muddy, uncomfortable and because of this many soldiers developed a  medical problems known as  trench foot.

Trench warfare was developed by the French military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban .

These trenches offered shelter to the  soldiers  from the storm of fires that came from the rifle, machine gun of the enemy.
