The Monroe Doctrine’s influence still exist today? If so, in what ways
Grace [21]

For most of the American history, the isolationist tendency prevailed in its foreign policy. In its early years, American foreign policy was in fact a reflection of the American national interest, namely to fortify the new nation’s independence. With the European continent torn apart by the great powers’ rivalry, the American nation could develop at its own pace, without any major external threat. Therefore the nonalignment practice, the isolationism, the constant effort to remain free of entanglements overseas became characteristic features of the early American foreign policy (Kissinger, 10-12). The step forward in strengthening this view was made in 1823, when the Monroe Doctrine was proclaimed, a political decision basically stating that further European action on the American continent will be interpreted as an intervention and a threat for the new nation’s stability. Surprisingly accepted without much of a revolt by the European powers, the new doctrine defended America and assured an uninterrupted pursue of its goal: growing internally and turning itself into a Great Power, with the formidable advantage of not being threatened by state rivalry

AFTER you have finished reading, use your graphic organizer to answer these eight questions.

What is the human rights issue in my book?

A: I think that the human rights issue was that immigrants should be able to go to the U.S. freely and safely if an immediate family member is there. Enrique is struggling to get to his mother but is constantly caught and deported back to his country. In the book "Enrique's Journey", it states that Enrique has already made 7 attempts and has been deported and is still trying. He has been beaten by police, robbed and deported many times, yet he is still trying. He has heard countless stories during his journey about migrants being beaten, raped, pushed off trains, and robbed. Some are trying to find their loved ones, while others are hoping to get a job in the U.S.

Where does this issue first come up in my book?

A: The issue starts at the very beginning of the book, when Lourdes is leaving her children behind.

Where in my book does this issue become most important?

A: I think that it becomes most important when Enrique is being deported back to his country and away from his mother.

How is this issue presented in my book?

A: This issue is presented as a choice that mothers have to make. Live in poverty or leave her children. It’s the only option for getting out of poverty.

In my book, who suffers due to the human rights issue?

A: In the book, the mother, children, grandmother and Marian Isabel all suffer because of the human rights issue. The mother misses her children and the children miss the mother. Then when Enrique leaves to look for his mother his girlfriend is affected because she feels lonely.

What does the wording in my quotations imply?

A: The characters speak Spanish and it is translated into English. Most of the quotation are in English but there are some phrases in Spanish.

When this issue becomes most important, what happens?

A: When the issue gets important, Enrique is making his way across Mexico. Everyone is worried for him and he is hopeful that he would find his mother.

How is this issue resolved in my book?

A: In the end, he finds his mother. Although the issue was solved for him, it was still not resolved for many.

Hope this helps:)
