For most of the American history, the isolationist tendency prevailed in its foreign policy. In its early years, American foreign policy was in fact a reflection of the American national interest, namely to fortify the new nation’s independence. In the book "Enrique's Journey", it states that Enrique has already made 7 attempts and has been deported and is still trying. He has been beaten by police, robbed and deported many times, yet he is still trying. He has heard countless stories during his journey about migrants being beaten, raped, pushed off trains, and robbed. Some are trying to find their loved ones, while others are hoping to get a job in the U.S.
