En matemáticas, las letras son utilizadas en las ecuaciones, para representar a través de ellas valores no conocidos que deben ser dilucidados por quien realiza la ecuación. Las letras más utilizadas con este propósito son las letras X e Y.

Así, por ejemplo, se da una suma con un valor numérico y un valor faltante denominado X, con un resultado también numérico, con lo cual el valor de X surgirá del resultado de la ecuación planteada. Por ejemplo:

8 + X = 10

X = 10 - 8

X = 2

8 + 2 = 10
