Scottish troops encircled Chirokee and took them to camps from where they waited for a journey of 800 miles to the west. This journey is known as the "Trail of Tears". From October and November 1853, in groups of 1,000 people, a long journey began, partly by rail, partly by steamboats, but mostly by foot. Many were left without money, property, and more than a quarter of Chirokee was buried on the road. When they arrived at their destination they ended up on a land far inferior to the one they were forced to leave.
