The king tightened control over the colonies because the war cost a lot so he put taxes to get more money and when the colonists refused to pay the taxes the king got worried about how much loyalty the colonists had so he tightened his grip. The colonial governments were based on the idea that the purpose of the governments was to protect the people's natural rights to life, liberty and property. The king created a government of laws. The people who made and enforced the laws did not have unlimited power and they, too, had to obey the laws. This meant that the colonial governments could not pass laws that violated the British constitution.
