I think it may have had something to do with Brit and France helping them win the war. Thus it made them as a fall back or cushion for the ottoman empire because they felt that they where able to rely on them now.

It deteriorated their quality of life as they were treated as lesser than and used as labor workers. It also put them at the bottom of the social class and they (Africans) were constantly looked down upon and only viewed as slaves and labor workers.
