The late 1800s was characterized by the arrival of many immigrants to the United States. Ethnic segregation, therefore, led immigrants to move to the "suburbs" creating enclaves. An example of this during the 19th century was the Irish in Boston. In fact, ethnic segregation was high in rural areas and immigrants were more comfortable living near urban factories and close to other immigrants.
