A functional region is defined as the area which is connected to a common function such as economy or entertainment. For example: People in New York City are connected through commerce and entertainment.
A formal region is defined as an area where people living in an area can share one or more characteristics and some have have distinct boundaries that help to identify that region. For example: people in the South live on ranches and wear cowboy boots, which helps to identify them.
