Many people believed that the war was never about slavery but about preserving the federation. In the beginning, even the northerners did not care much about slavery and just wanted to prevent the confederation from seceding. This was mostly due to things like economy separation of power.

Pioneers had to build their shelters to endure climate conditions, clear the land for farming. However, the opportunity to have their own portion of land motivated many farjmers, former slaves, and immigrants.
