Norman Lewis was an African-American painter that came from the Harlem movement in his hometown of New York. However, over the course of his lifetime,<u> he started to paint more in the abstract expressionist style.</u> He was the rare African-American person in the movement, and <u>he would use his art to represent the black struggle and life in modern America, as well as to support the civil rights movement. </u>
<u>Because of this, he is the one in the group of artists that departed from the manner of abstract expressionist art that is often nonrepresentational. </u>
Many scales are diatonic including Major, Minor (the Harmonic minor is an exception) and modal scales. Examples of non-diatonic scale are pentatonic, octatonic and whole-tone scales.
