In the times of the frontier, there was no public school system for children to attend, it wasn't even law that children had to go to school. Most of what a child was taught came directly from their parents, which was still hard as their parents were always working to support the family, even the mother. The main reason why children did not usually go to school in the frontier was that schools were sparse and far between and were fairly costly for an average pioneer family.
