After the French and Indian War which effectively ended French holdings  in the New World, Parliament passed the Royal Proclamation of 1763. This prohibited  colonization of the newly acquired Ohio River Valley. This was an early incident that  inspired colonial dissatisfaction with British rule. Later incidents would include the Boston Massacre in which British soldiers shot into a crowd of agitated  colonists, and the Boston Tea party in which colonists dumped a great deal  of British East India Company tea into Boston Harbor. The British retaliated against the  dumping of the tea by passing the Intolerable Acts.
