On his initial journey, things went so well that Vargas thought Spaniards could return to New Mexico and everything would be fine. After the first trip, there was celebration in Mexico. But many Pueblos were expecting his return and were not happy. Many hoped that since Vargas had left, they would not see Spaniards again. Some chose to move away.
