The ID, according to Sigmund Freud is that element of the human mind or psychology that strives to fulfil it's every whim and desire/pleasure or basic urges of man.
The ID has the following qualities:
- unorganized.
- demanding and insistent
- illogical
- lacks morals
- instinctual
- selfish
- unconscious
So if one were to act on all the desires/urges put forward to the concious part of one through the ID, it'd be a recipie for disaster.
Thankfully, there is a higher part of the mind called the Ego. The Ego create the balance between pleasure and pain and rules over the ID. It's domain spans the preconcious part of the mind and the concious.
It is also refered to as the rational part of the human personality that tames the basic passionate urges of an individual.
Sometimes the ID still weilds much influence over the Ego. To strenghten the Ego, psychologists recommend the following:
1. Acceptance: Accepting things are they are is not same as resigning to fate. It simply means being at peace with what is.
2. Adjusting expectations: Ability to stay realistic is an essential quality of strong people. To be able to adjust our expectations about situations or people or even our selves based on what is observable or what is, helps to remove frustrations from when the higher expectations are not met.
3. Intentionally raising our ability to tolerate frustrations and pain from dissapointments.
This can be done gradually and better still in advance. Reframing things in a positive light is one of the best ways to deal with frustrating or painful situations.
When the three steps are taken, it has the ability to dampen the tension created by the ID during unpleasant situations.
